Illinois State Police and HAAS Alert Partnership Aims to Enhance Officer Safety

Aug 15, 2025

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — Illinois State Police (ISP) have teamed up with HAAS Alert to enhance the safety of their officers through a new technology partnership. Since the collaboration began at the start of the year, ISP has delivered over 11 million driver alerts, according to Brock Aun, Vice President of Product at HAAS Alert. Aun said, "This is one of those great ways where technology is actually making the world safer."

The partnership integrates HAAS Alert's software into navigation apps like Apple Maps and Waze, as well as vehicles from automakers Stellantis and Volkswagen. Aun explained, "We don't want drivers to have to take a lot of extra steps to be safe on the road and so that's where our partnerships really matter. By working with the automakers and the navigation apps to make it so you don't have to go download something special or activate some special features. It's just a part of how your car or your mapping app works."

The system operates seamlessly with existing emergency alerting processes. Aun said, "Whenever ISP cars are on scene with their lights on and they're reporting that they are on scene and working an event, that information is what we are using to deliver an alert out and so this works basically in tandem with the emergency alerting that they're already doing on the road."

While Illinois State Police have not confirmed if these alerts are directly preventing officer-related accidents, data indicates a potential positive impact. Since 2019, there has been an average of about 23 crashes per year, but 2025 is on track to fall below that average, with only 10 move-over crashes reported so far.

Aun also noted that HAAS Alert aims to expand its technology to other sectors, including work zone fleets, utility and construction, maintenance fleets, towing fleets, and school buses. "They all rely on drivers noticing things like lights and sirens and signs to slow down and move over and so giving them the ability to send those digital alerts just increases safety for everyone," he said.

I called a local towing company to ask how they feel about servicing vehicles on the roadside currently. They said that they feel very unsafe.

In a statement, Illinois State Police emphasized, "Move Over crashes are preventable and we’ve had too many troopers killed and injured because of them."
