Digital Alerts Coming to Illinois Vehicle Infotainment Systems

Dec 18, 2024

Illinois State Police have announced more ways for drivers to receive alerts telling them to slow down and move over when State Police activity is ahead of them.

State Police and the Illinois Department of Innovation & Technology have announced a partnership with HAAS Alert to expand notifications to select Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz, RAM and Volkswagen vehicles powered by Safety Cloud.

State Police said they’re one of the first law enforcement agencies in the country to provide real-time GPS-based traffic information to help prevent “Move Over” crashes.

The Move Over Law, known as Scott’s Law, requires drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching stationary emergency vehicles, including all highway maintenance vehicles displaying flashing lights and any stationary vehicles with their hazard lights on.

The partnership with HAAS Alert builds on the prior partnership with Google Public Sector after State Police announced a system to send the same alerts to Waze and Google Maps.

HAAS Alert will expand the real-time GPS-based alerts to more drivers on the road.

“Move Over crashes are preventable and we’ve had too many troopers killed and injured because of them,” ISP Director Brendan Kelly said. “To keep both ISP troopers and drivers safe, ISP continues to identify new ways to alert people when they need to slow down and move over. Our partnership with HAAS Alert will help us ensure drivers are paying attention and focused on the road ahead.”

Illinois State Police have lost two troopers since 2019 - Trooper Christoper Lambert on Jan. 12, 2019, on Interstate 294 and Trooper Brooke Jones-Story on March 28, 2019, on U.S. Route 20.
