The 2024 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program

Nov 14, 2024

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program is a federally funded initiative designed to support fire departments and emergency medical services (EMS) organizations across the United States in enhancing their capabilities and improving public safety. The AFG program, which is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides funding for a variety of critical needs.

These include the purchase of firefighting equipment, protective gear, training, and operational expenses. The goal is to ensure that local departments, especially those serving underfunded or rural areas, have the resources they need to protect their communities effectively and safely.

In addition to providing financial aid for equipment and training, the AFG program also prioritizes funding for initiatives that strengthen response capabilities and improve overall safety standards. This can include investments in modern technology, hazard mitigation, and efforts to enhance the health and wellness of firefighters.

The program operates through a competitive application process, with funding awarded based on the department's needs and the potential impact of the proposed projects. The AFG program helps to address the growing challenges faced by fire service agencies, ensuring they are better prepared to respond to emergencies and safeguard the communities they serve.

The FY 2024 AFG application period opens Nov. 12, 2024 at 9 a.m. ET and closes on Dec. 20, 2024 at 5 p.m. ET. A total of $291,600,000 in grants are available for the FY 24 cycle.

Safety Cloud® by HAAS Alert may be considered a high-priority equipment purchase for fire departments and non-affiliated EMS agencies. This enables departments to meet NFPA standards 950 8.12 and 1900 A.7.12 for Digital Alert Warning Systems.
